Esplanade

Photography Timelines
Esplanade

‘Esplanade’ talks about (short) timespans that we do not perceive: the time that a weed needs from his germination to adultness, or the time that a fountain in an esplanade needs to fall into decay.

The images come from an abandoned fountain in an esplanade in the middle of Charleroi, the city where I live. The fountain slowly disintegrates. As its foundations fall apart in loose pieces and turn themselves slowly into dust. Weeds emerge from the dried-up reservoir, the debris between them disintegrate. The leftover water that the plants need to grow will evaporate soon. Finally – one cannot see them, but their waste proves their existence – there are the humans. They pass by on isolated moments and disappear again.
